Progress report on Security Professionals' Registry

The Australasian Council of Security Professionals (ACSP) has completed workshops in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney and a briefing in Auckland as part of the Council's project to develop a registry for the security profession.

Initial results indicate strong support for the registry concept.  The key issues to emerge were:

  • a strong preference for recognition of professional experience as a core criterion with general management being recognised as a compliment to relevant experience
  • education was held in high regard as criterion but there was a requirement to validate educational requirements and currency and not weight them above demonstrated relevant experience.

Seminar attendees rated leadership in the professional associations but both leadership positions and general association membership was weighted less heavily than experience and education.

There was support for a two tier system to encourage a developmental pathway for those entering the profession or falling short of meeting all the criteria. A two tier model is under active consideration by the Project Team.

On the basis of the outcomes, the ACSP will progress the registry proposal with plans to announce the Registry Board on 7th December at the Combined Associations Seminar and Function to be held University House at ANU. The date, confirmation pending, is 7 December 2010.
